What is the Civil Resolution Tribunal?

The CRT is an online tribunal said to be the first of its kind in Canada

The CRT is a tribunal created and governed by the CRT Act back in 2012. The CRT has evolved over time to include jurisdiction over strata disputes by July 2016 and small claim disputes up to $5,000 by June 1, 2017. Before April 1, 2019, the CRT had little or no involvement in ICBC injury claims.

The CRT is an online tribunal said to be the first of its kind in Canada. All submissions are usually online without the need to attend an oral hearing. Clearly, the process provides an advantage to ICBC and its defence lawyers over a self-represented party who lacks knowledge of the process or who may not be computer savvy.

The CRT has a host of rules which can be found online and will not be repeated here.
